CAPE OF GOOD HOPE
Mail posted directly on to a TPO
March 1904
~ · ·
Main feature
The 6d late fee for posting on to a TPO. Strictly the envelope should have
been struck with a 'LATE FEE' handstamp [see Goldblatt page 120). The 6d
and the fact that the stamps have been cancelled with the TPO cds
confirms this type of posting.
The letter was posted on to the Midland TPO which ran between Port Elizabeth and
Naauwpoort. Letters could be posted on to the TPO at either end station or at
intermediate stations . The officer in charge of the TPO carried a stock of stamps to pay
for the postage and the late fee. All classes of mail could be posted on to the TPO.
Registration was charged at a fee of Is Od and not the usual4d fee .
