31 Skilling Banco via Austria to the Papal States
In 1855 Italy had not been unified as a single country but was divided into a number of
smaller states. The Papal States or Roman States consisted of the areas adjacent to Rome.
Mail from Sweden to the Italian States involved three principal routes, all of which took
advantage of the well developed German system. From Germany the mail could proceed
through Austria, Switzerland or France. The Austrian route was the most frequently used.

Mail from Sweden to Great
Britain could be sent by a
number of routes, where the
route via Germany or
Belgium being predominant
in the early period making
use of ports on the North
Sea such as Ostend. Later on
mail was sent from Göteborg
to Hull by private ship or to
Lowestoft by mail packet.
There were also routes
via Denmark direct or via
Denmark and Hamburg.
Finally there was also a
