FRAME 8 SWEDEN 1858-1872 THE COAT-OF-ARMS TYPE II ”ÖRE”
12 Öre h1. Bright ultramarine [April 1861‐December 1862]
First domestic letter rate from STOCKHOLM with private mailbag (lösväska) to Rydboholm Castle. Rydboholm had
a private mailbag (lösväska) for mail to and from the city of Stockholm. This letter is cancelled with the “Star” (in
use on local letter mail within Stockholm). The letter is fully paid with 12 Öre domestic rate, but forwarded together
with the mail in the private mailbag to Rydboholm, explaining the strike with the “star” (scarce on domestic mail).
Rydboholm Castle dates back to the medieval period with the main building built in 1548. Today the castle is the
residence of Gustaf Douglas’s family ‐ the collector and owner of ”The Golden Collection of Swedish Philately”.
12 Öre i. (Dull) Ultramarine [April 1861‐December 1862]
First domestic letter rate from NYKÖPING 11.6.1862 to Stockholm with the extra “registration” service. From 1 July
1855 the letter addressee’s name was normally not listed on the letter bill. However it was still possible to get the
addressee’s name recorded on the letter bill by endorsing REGISTRERAS. The post office had a special handstamp
with the text REGISTR:. The sender had to pay the postmaster 12 Öre to compensate him for the extra work involved
in listing the addressee’s name on the letter bill. No receipt was given. The service ceased on 31 December 1872.
