1. Steamboat and Steam Markings Natchez
The mark "STEAMBOAT" or "STEAM" indicates that the letter was picked up somewhere along an inland river, lake,
bay or coastal sound by the captain or clerk of a vessel having no mail carrying contract. The captain was required by law
to carry them to a Post Office where they entered the mail stream after being marked to indicate their origin.
