3 I III   With the introduction of the five figure numeric postcode in
          1972 a completely new language had to be devised. Trials began in
4 II II   October 1972 at the new mechanised sorting office at Orleans-
          la-Source which gave its name to the new language of which there
5 I I II  were two versions, La Source 1 and its successor La Source 2.

6 I I II  La Source 1 is identifiable by a fixed start represented by a
7 III I   stroke on the right and by strokes in three of five other
8 I II I  positions. As a binary value the zero is treated as a 10.
