NUMERIC LANGUAGE
The Orleans-la-Source sorting office became fully operational on 15 March 1973 and continued
using the La Source 1 language for just one year until 24 March 1974. The bulk of the operations
were conducted on the L.I.A.P. equipment although for the occasional rejected or misaddressed
item three manual coding desks were available.

Orleans-la-Source to Meaux 9 November 1973
The mail treated was predominantly for customers of Electricite de France - Gaz de France,
Credit Agricole, Credit Lyonnais, Banque Populaire and the Caisse Nationale d'Epargne as the
window envelopes and printed addresses were compatible with the L.I.A.P. equipment. Only non-
urgent mail was accepted as delays were inevitable due to technical problems and the
unfamiliarity of the operators with the new equipment; the above cover is annotated on the
reverse with the date of receipt - 20 November 1973, eleven days after posting.
