The Postmarks of Sierra Leone 1854 to 1961

My first venture into philatelic publishing was made in 1990. I had been collecting village cancellations for a
while and was looking for a reference book to help write up the growing accumulation. Somewhat deflated by
the discovery that there wasn’t such a book in existence, I was encouraged to write it!

The first book was somewhat advance for its time as the bulk of the pages were created using a word processor
and spreadsheets with the black & white postmark illustrations glued on to the otherwise finished pages.
These were then sent to the printers and basically ‘photocopied’ to produce the bound book. The first edition
lasted for 25 years, but inevitably my master copy was groaning under the weight of the annotated updates
and new discoveries.

First Edition, 1990 Second Edition, 2015

In 2015 three more students of the subject joined me to bring the story up to date by adding several new
postmarks and very many extensions to recorded periods of use. This time Horry undertook the typesetting,
and the new version is vastly improved in every sense.
