Sierra Leone Thimbles
For several decades after the initial opening of public postal services in Sierra Leone the only office was
in Freetown. Thus there was no need to have any handstamps that included an office name. Two series of
thimbles were sent out: one in 1861 and the second in 1881. The handstamps read either SIERRA LEONE or
SIERRA LEONE PAID. These are all relatively rare - especially the PAID marks - as they were normally struck
on letters that bore no adhesives. Struck in red or black ink.
