Bonthe, Sherbro Island

After the GPO in Freetown, the second post office to open was in Bonthe, the      Bonthe,
main settlement on Sherbro Island. It was opened in August 1872. The earliest   Sherbro Island
postmarks reflected the island name Sherbro; it was in 1905 that the first
cancellers with the town name Bonthe were introduced. From 11 November
1890 a weekly boat service by SS Susu operated between Bonthe and Freetown.

10 April 1891 - Sherbro to London, UK. Transit marks of Freetown (12 Apr, back), Liverpool (28 Apr) and London (29 Apr).
                                                 Rate 2½d postage plus 2d registration fee.
