The Sixpence Stamp 1859 to 1895
1878 Eighth Printing. Crown CC Watermark. Comb Perf 14.
This printing in violet ink was the first on watermarked paper. The watermark impressions are more
widely spaced than the stamps, so only a small portion of the watermark is present on each stamp.
Although despatched in 1878, no used examples are known prior to 1885. Specimens were not produced.

On 1 April 1879 the half-ounce letter rate to the UK was reduced from 6d to 4d; the most common use for
6d adhesives after this date was on registered letters, ie 4d postage plus 2d registration fee.
