SOME OF THE STRIPS FROM THE EXHIBITOR’S COLLECTION

                                                    1888 STRIP OF PINKS

                                                    1892 STRIP OF FOUR

These and other strips show the typical variety of inconsistency of printings observed in single
stamps. Although the stamps in each strip show internal consistency in terms of overall colour,
it can be see easily that there is a trend from left to right in depth of colour. However the 1892
strip shows fewer internal consistencies, perhaps indicative of better dye control.

It is also obvious that areas where little or no colour has resulted, probably due to inconsistent
inking of the forms or inconsistent application of pressure during the printing process. All of
this suggests that the stamps were printed by individuals and not through the use of a
mechanized printing press. Unfortunately double rows of three are not available to the
exhibitor in any pink colour, so no comment is possible on blocks. The 1888 greenish blue block
of six in frame 3 does not show this effect.

The 1892 strip of four shows very poor placement of the printing blocks, suggesting
handstamping rather than typography as claimed by Koepel & Manners in their catalogue.
