GREAT BRITAIN CHURCHILL ISSUE
IMPRIMATURS
From the collection of Simon Moorcroft.
Member since 2008. Lives in England.
In January 1965 Winston Churchill died and it was decided to issue a set of commemorative stamps.
Designs submitted by David Gentlemen were accepted and stamps were issued on 8th July 1965. The
examples here are imprimaturs sold by the National Postal Museum. The design features the Wilding
portrait reduced to cameo size, which in itself was a radical departure that set the precedent for
future designs. This issue coincided with a debate around stamp design including whether the
Queen's head should be removed - indeed there are essays for this issue with 'Great Britain'
substituted for the Queen's portrait.
