On 16th September 1968 the British Post Office introduced a two tier postal system. The postal
workers objected to this by banning overtime working and calling one day strikes. This letter was
posted on a strike day - 31st January 1969. The sender has endorsed the envelope Postal Strike; No
Stamps Available and franked it with an 8d bisected stamp = 4d, plus a ld stamp, making up the Sd
First Class letter rate. It has a Leeds machine cancel of 31 JAN 1969. Bisected stamps were illegal.
However, on this occasion it was not noticed, or was allowed due to the endorsement.
