The United Arab Emirates came into existence as a direct result of Britain's 1968 decision to
withdraw military forces from 'East of Suez' by the end of 1971. The UAE came into effect on
lst December 1971, immediately after the British treaties expired. The haste with which new
institutions had to be created and new procedures put in place resulted in many temporary
measures. On lst May 1973 the UAE's Currency Board issued the new federal currency, the UAE
Dinar comprising 100 fils. Abu Dhabi and Dubai both issued provisional aerogrammes with the old
country names obliterated, and surcharged in the new currency. The postally used example shown
here is a modern rarity. It is unrecorded in Werner Wiegand's Aerogrammes Catalogue (in
German). In Terry Jones' English-language catalogue, it is noted as cancelled to order only.
