INDEPENDENCE FOR CZECHOSLOVAKIA
From the collection of Yvonne Wheatley FRPSL.
Member since 1972. Lives in England.
On 28th October 1918 Czechoslovakia gained its independence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Ten years later the Ministry of Posts wanted to mark the anniversary with a stamp issue so the lOth
Anniversary set appeared on 22nd October 1928. It consisted of ten stamps, nine of which were
views and the penultimate value was a portrait of President Masaryk. Drawings of all the designs
were prepared by the artist and engraver, Karel Seizinger. The portrait drawing shown above is an
early draft. In the issued stamp both side panels were identical with the year in the centre.
