Apollo 13 (AS-508) We've Had A Problem
While conditions inside Aquarius were uncomfortable - with temperatures barely above freezing, con-
densation soaking their clothes and drinking water restricted to only six ounces per person per day - they
were survivable. But without clean air to breathe the astronauts were in danger of suffocating in their own
carbon dioxide. Aquarius was equipped with lithium hydroxide canisters to scrub the air, but only for the
duration of the lunar landing. Incredibly, those in Odyssey were of a different shape and so the experts at
Mission Control set about the task of fitting these square pegs into round holes using only the limited
items available to the crew.
