At 4:03 pm today, the Saturn 5 booster, the world's most powerful
rocket, lifted-off in a cloud of orange flame. Trouble arose 3 hours
after Apollo 14 Astronauts - Alan Shepard Jr., Ed Mitchell and
Stu Roosa set out on their journey to the moon. At 7:11 pm
Major Roosa made the first of five attempts to steer the nose of
the command ship (Kitty Hawk) into the docking ring of the lunar
lander (Antares). Docking occurred on the sixth attempt at 9 pm
when Apollo 14 was 23,800 miles from earth.
