The Apollo Story

          Apollo 14 (AS-509) A Very Tough Place
Just as with Apollo 12, they experienced problems with the dust. 'It is very fine, like talcum powder, it
clings to everything,' said Shepard. Outwardly businesslike, he paused briefly at one point to take in the
spectacle of this alien world with the crescent of Earth hanging above the void, and he wept silently from
pent up emotion, the relief of the landing and the sheer wonderment of the beauty of his home planet.
As they continued their EVA the two men quickly adapted to the one-sixth gravity, gaining confidence
with a bouncing gait; as Mitchell confirmed, 'it's easy. Just a little push and you spring right up.' At
times they showed signs of working too intensely, breathing hard and grunting at their exertions, some-
thing remedied with a slowing of pace, enabling the moonwalk to be extended to four hours and fifty
          minutes.
