~----------.The Apollo Story
Apollo 14 (AS-509) A Very Tough Place
When Alan Shepard stepped off the ladder on 5 February, his first words were, 'It's been a long while,
but ... we're here!' Words that spoke as much of his personal journey as of the many problems that had
beset the mission. 'Gazing around at the bleak landscape, it certainly is a stark place at Fra Mauro. It's
made all the more stark by the fact that the sky is completely dark. This is a very tough place.'
APOLLO 14 - MOONLANDING - CAPE CANAVERAL
At 4: 18 am today - Apollo Astronauts Shepard and Mitchell
became the 3rd Apollo team to land on the moon. Like most of the
Apollo 14 flight the moon walk was delayed for 50 minutes due to
communication problems but the flaws were minor and at 9:49 am
Captain Shepard became the fifth man to step down the ladder
onto the moon followed by the sixth man - Commander Mitchell.
The 2 Astronauts worked for over 9 hours during 2 moon walks
and collected 108 pounds of lunar rock and soil - the largest, most
varied and probably the oldest samples ever returned from the
moon.
