Birmingham “Spoon” Duplex Cancellation
Birmingham “spoon” duplex cancellation. July 15, 1854 to Norwich. Two adhesives
canceled by two strikes of duplex cancellation device with numeral 75. Cancellation
devices, such at this, allowed the postal clerk to both cancel the adhesive and datestamp
the letter with the date of mailing unobscured. The Birmingham spoon cancellation was
first used on April 30, 1854.
