Postal Uses
Postage Rates and Fees Late Fee
March 27, 1851. London to Huddersfield. 2d adhesive paying postage for letter between ½ and 1
ounce; 1d adhesive paying late fee for mail deposited after 6 o’clock PM. Black London Inland “EU
MR-29 1851” and blue “Huddersfield MR-28 1851” datestamps on the reverse.
Three pence rated covers are very unusual.
During the imperforate period, there were only two ways to have a 3d rate that was not over
or underpaid:
- 1 oz letter plus late fee
- Voter notice rate of 1d postage and the special 2d registration fee only for that class of
mailing
