1915. However, a number of the Swedes remained under private
contracts with the Persian government.
The Swedes disliked the Russians and in particular their
colonial attitude towards Persia. By March 1916 fightings
between Germans supported local Gendarmerie troops together
with the Turks and Russian troops had become frequent. Some
of the remain- ing Swedish officers now joined the Germans in
Mesopotamia and were engaged in heavy fightings against the
Russians in Persia. As the Russians were much more heavily
armed the remains of the "Democratic" troops supported by
Germany soon lost and were pushed out of Persia into Mesopotamia.
A special department at the Ministry of Interior was created for the Gendarmerie called
Bureau de !'Organisation de la Gendarmerie Gouvernementale
