To Crimea, 15 September, 1855
Letter to military officer. Paid letter from Monkton, Scotland via Marseilles to Crimea
and disinf ected in transit through the Mediterranean sea; cover is vinegar stained.
Letter put in the mail at Monkton, an Ayrshire receiving office. Receiving offices only
obliterated postage from 1854 until 1860 and used their undated name stamps as cancels,
which are called Scots Locals. Receiving offices had limited functions, and did not sell
postage other than the ld inland rate adhesive.
Onward transits 15 September, Glasgow, and 17 September, London. Letter sent to
Lieutenant Colonel Robertson with manuscript "Immediate" notation.
Crimean War mail and on/y recorded Monkton Scots Local cancel on an
Overseas letter.
Scotsmen fought with great distinction in the wars of Empire, with a quarter of men of military age engaged in some kind of service.
