Railway post office agencies Eerste River Station May 1869
The development of railways in CGH in the 1860's led to the creation of post office age nci es under the control of the
railway companies. Th e age ncies were run by railway staff . They are to be distinguished from Railway Offices [RO in
cds] under the control of the CGH Post Office. Railway PO Agencies had the words [or abbreviations for] siding,
station, road , rail junction and crossing in the cds. This example of STN. is one of the earliest known date of use for
Eeerste River Station [earliest 9th May 1869] . ERS was a station on the Cap e Town , Wellington and Docks Railway Co.
Ltd.'s lines. The ld rate is the local delivery rate introdu ced from September 1860 as circumstances allowed.
Hottentots Holland became Somerset West and was under Stellenbosch whose cds is on this item. The double oval of
Hottentots Holland was in use until July 1876 .
