Carried on a private ship [not belonging to the Donald Currie line].
The ship letter rate was 4d for each % ounce between the 1st April
1863 and the 30th June 1876 when the % ounce rate went up to 6d.
This letter went into Liverpool rather than Southampton [Union Steamship line] or
LondonfDevonport [Donald Currie castle line]. The Paid Ship letter ds of Liverpool
and London have been applied [as has a square ds of London in red on the back] .
The 4d is a credit from the Cape Post Office to the British Post Office.
