The REGISTERED handstamp first issued to Cape Town in 1863 or 1864.
The registration fee was 4d and the postage should have been 4d for lh oz at least. As
this is a front a missing stamp could have been elsewhere even though there was space
for another 2d stamp by the others. The alternative is that [because of the addressee)
the envelope contained printed banknote or other printed banking paper th e rate for
which was ld for each 1 oz.
