Main feature
The use of the One Penny on One shilling surcharge. Only 120,000
stamps were so surcharged in December 1876 as the order for a new
supply of the 1d carmine had not been delivered and no further 1d
stamps were available from stocks in Cape Town.
The explanation for the telegraph envelope posted at Cape Town is probably that a telegraph message
was received there for posting once the whereabouts of General Cunnynghame were known. The
telegraph prepayment would have included the forwarding postage. Noted as being received in Cape
Town it was forwarded to Wynberg which is about 8 miles from Cape Town. The 'Free ' annotation
and countersignature and designation was put on over the 'to pay' words so that there was no charge
for the telegram on delivery.
