The packet rate to the UK was 6d for each '12 ounce from the 13th June
1876 until the 1st October 1888 when the rate was 4d for each% ounce.
This was the first surcharge to cope with the need for 3d stamps (pending a supply from
De la rue in London] following the reduction in postal rates for intemalletters to 3d for
Y2 ounce from 4d for Y2 ounce on the 1st November 1879.
The surcharge was done by Saul Solomon & Coin Cape Town. 5000 sheets were overprinted giving
1,200,000 stamps. The stamps were in the hands of the Cape PO on the 26th September 1879.
