Octagonal numeral stamps

Main feature
The use of the framed 30 of Stellenbosch to cancel the adhesive stamp
well after these octagonal stamps had ceased their original use and
purpose.
This is Goldblatt type ONl (page 61].
The octagonal stamps were issued in 1849 to the 61 post offices then open in Cape
Colony. 30 was allocated to Stellenbosch. They had been intended to serve as a defacing
cancellation on adhesive stamps when issued but the small triangular obliterator was
later introduced for this purpose. Numbers 10, 13, 17, 30 , 40, 46, 51 , 53 and 59 are
known cancelling rectangular Cape adhesives.
