The 77'2d 7'2 ounce rate to the United States [two rates making ls 3d].
The registration fee was 4d and was paid by the impressed stamp on
the back of the envelope.
The postage seems to have gone to this rate in 1880. Cape Colony did not join the UPU until the 1st
January 1895 whereas the United States and Great Britain had joined in July 1875. The '5 '
accountancy mark [underneath the London EC registered ds] is the credit to the United Kingdom and
is the equivalent of the UPU rate for a Y2 to 1 ounce letter [2 x 2Y:zd] from the United Kingdom to the
United States.
