CAPE OF GOOD HOPE
3 on Three Pence Pale Dull rose
August 1880
Cape Town [1] to the United Kingdom
January 1881
The packet rate to the UK was 6d for each '12 ounce from the 13th June
1876 until the 1st October 1888 when the rate was 4d for each '12 ounce.
This 3 surcharge was made so that the new threepenny stamps could be distinguished
from the one penny pale carmine stamps. The surcharge was done by Saul Solomon
starting at the end of July 1880 when 7,925 sheets of 240 stamps were surcharged.
The '3' was in two types a broad type [SG37] and [as in this case] a narrower and taller
type [SG38]. The ratio on a pane of 60 was 54 broad and 6 narrow. The 3d claret was
issued in January 1881. The stamps are cancelled by the Cape Town duplex BONC 1.
