CAPE OF GOOD HOPE
3 on 3d rose, 4d blue and 1s Od green
August 1880, January 1887 and January 1864
Port Elizabeth [2] to India via the United Kingdom
September 1881
Main feature
The routing of a letter to India via the United Kingdom rather than to
Zanzibar and Aden.
In the absence of a copy of the Cape Monthl y Postal Sheet [published monthly by the Secretary to the
General Post Office cape Town] for September 1881 the best explanation of the rate of ls lOd is that it is
a double weight letter Y:z to 1 oz with the postage made up of two 6d rates to the United Kingdom and two
5d rates from the United Kingdo t' n to India.
The 6d Cape to UK rate was introduced on the 1•t July 1876. The 5d UK to India rate was introduced on
the 1s t Febru~ 1880.
This leaves the red ' 10' in red crayon as twice the 5d UK to India as a credit to the British Post Office.
