CAPE OF GOOD HOPE
Cape Town to St Helena
May 1873
Main feature
' The rate to St Helena by the United Kingdom packet was 6d for each%
oz. This was a four rates letter 1% to 2 oz.
St Helena was credited with 2d of each 6d hence the '8' in red. Letters to and from St Helena and Cape
Colony in the period 1860 to 1880 were numerous because of the importance of St Helena as a stopping
place for ships. This is apparent from papers seen in the Archives at The Castle in St Helena However
little mail from Cape Colony to St Helena seems to have survived delivery on St Helena . This letter to The
Archbishop is an exception even if not in the best of condition .
