The s hi p letter rate of 4d for :Y2 oz. for letters posted in the port of
departure of the ship. If not posted in the port of departure the rate was
6d for :Y2 oz in the same period.
The letter was endorsed to go 'per Gothland' and on arrival in the UK was dealt with in the Ship letter
Office in London. The 2d in red applied in Cape Town represents the division of postage between Cape
Colony and the UK with the ship owner getting 2d and the UK and Cape Colony getting ld each.
The letter inside refers to the Gold fields, the Diamond mines and to paying postage on letters.
