CAPE OF GOOD HOPE
Beaufort to the West In dies [Trinidad]
March 1895
Main feature
The fact that the delivery of this letter was affected in its final stages by
the Great Fire which consumed the business quarter of Port of Spain in
Trinidad on the 4th March 1895.
The rate paid is 11 Yzd made up of the registration fee of 4d and three UPU 2 Yzd rates for a letter 1 to 1 Yz
ozs. The 4d registration fee was paid by the embossed 4d stamp on the flap on the back of the envelope.
The effect of the destruction of the Post Office and all its equipment was that no cds of any sort were
applied to this item on arrival in Port of Spain later in march 1895 which is most unusual for a registered
letter.
[See over for more details ofthe fire]. [Illustrated in BWISC Bulletin No. 214 September 2007 page 36.]
