The 6d ~ oz rate to Germany introduced on the Ist October 1888. This
was a double weight letter. The previous rate had been 7~d for~ oz.
The postage to Germany was reduced from 6d for each Y:z ounce to 3d for each Y:z ounce on the 1•t January
1891.
The 2 Yzd mark in red was the credit of postage to the United Kingdom [equivalent to the UPU postage
between the United Kingdom and Gennany]. The United Kingdom and Germany had been members of
the GPU later UPU since July 1875. Cape Colony did not join the UPU until the 1st January 1895.
