The 6d Y2 oz rate to the United States was introduced on the 1st October
1888. The previous rate had been 7 1/2d for Y2 oz.
The postage to the United States was reduced from 6d for each Yz ounce to 3d for each Yz ounce on the 1st
January 1891.
The 2Yzd mark in red was the credit of postage to the United Kingdom [equivalent to the UPU postage
between the United Kingdom and the United States]. The United Kingdom and the United States had been
members of the GPU later UPU since July 1875. Cape Colony did not join the UPU until the 1st January
