CAPE OF GOOD HOPE
Cape Town to Nova Scotia Canada
June 1887
Main feature
The 7%d% ounce rate to Canada. This is a double rate letter.
Notes
The postage seems to have gone to this rate in 1880 for European countries and the United States and
Canada.
Cape Colony did not join the UPU until the 151 January 1895 whereas the United States, Canada and
Great Britain had joined in July 1875. There is no 2lfzd accountancy mark which one sees on mail to
European countries and to the United States presumably because ofthe British connection with
Canada.
The letter was sent from Liverpool to Halifax. Quartered circle with L on the back in red.
