The combination of two rates: one to the United Kingdom and the other
the United Kingdom to India via Brindisi.
The Cape rate for a Yz oz letter was 6d from the 1st July 1876 to the 30th September 1888. The British
charge for a letter to the east including India via Brindisi was lld which then explains the lld
prepayment and the 5d credit to the United Kingdom .
