CAPE OF GOOD HOPE
Ship letters
Simonstown [27] to Singapore
February 1887
Main features
Singapore as a destination and the 'G' overprint of Griqualand used
out of date and place. BPA Certificate on the back]
The ship letter regulation was that a letter for a British Colony [not Natal and not having to be sent
via the United Kingdom] when posted from the port from whence the letter was shipped was to be
charged at 4d for each 12 ounce, otherwise 6d for each 12 ounce. This letter was posted at Simonstown
and treated as a letter posted at Cape Town to justify the 4d postage.
CGH stamps were overprinted 'G' for use in Griqualand between 1871 and 1877 after which unused
stocks were returned to the GPO in cape Town for reissue generally within Cape Colony. There are
many variations of the 'G' used in the overprints.
