Main feature
The 7lhd% ounce rate to Germany. The registration fee of 4d is paid
by the 4d blue stamp impressed on the back.
The postage seems to have gone to this rate in 1880. Cape Colony did not join the UPU until the 151
January 1895 whereas Germany and Great Britain had joined in July 1875. The 2Y.d accountancy mark
[in red in manuscript] is the credit to the United Kingdom and is the equivalent of the UPU rate for aY,
ounce letter from the United Kingdom to the United States. The balance of 5d represents Cape postage
and the cost of sea transit to the United Kingdom.
