This is a double rate letter on which the postage was ls 3d and the
registration fee 4d making the total paid ls 7d.
The postage seems to have gone to this rate in 1880. Cape Colony did not join the UPU until the 1 '1
January 1895 whereas the United States and Great Britain had joined in July 1875. 2Y2d was the
credit to the United Kingdom and is the equivalent of the UPU rate for a Y2 ounce letter from the
United Kingdom to Germany. A 2Y2d accountancy mark is normally seen on a single letter but as this
was a double letter the credit is marked by a red manuscript 5.
The cds of the Registered letter Office Cape Town appears on the back. The R in an oval was applied
at Cape Town Registered Letter Office.
