In 1903 the UPU received 727 sets overprinted SPECIMEN. Every member country received a strip of five
stamps, each having the Type D12 handstamp.
. The constant varieties on the Type 12 overprint give some clues to the way in
which the forme was created. Seven of the ten ‘M’s in the fifth column
. have some variety, suggesting that the SPECIMEN forme
was made up from a stereo manufactured from
an original horizontal setting of type.
