World War II Civil Censorship
Handstamp Type 6
Postmarked 26 August 1939, this letter represents the earliest known example of mail censored anywhere in
West Africa in World War II. It was posted eight days before war between the UK and Germany was declared.
26 August 1939 - Freetown to Birmingham, UK. Posted on a ship off Freetown, the adhesives were cancelled with the POSTED ON
STEAMER handstamp. The air mail service was being interrupted at this time, and this letter just missed the overland service to Dakar.
Back of envelope.
