9 May 1896 - Telegram sent from Berne in
Switzerland to Freetown.
It was sent from the GPO in Freetown
to Sherbro by registered post.
In 1896 a telegraph link was
established with Bathurst in Gambia,
and thus with Europe. It was not
until the railway was built in the early
20th century that telegraph lines were
available to the interior.
