World Scout Jamboree 1957
CHIEF SCOUT OF THE WORLD
1907-1942
TO ALL WHO RECEIVE
MY FRIENDS THIS LETTER
THIS FIRST DAY COVER comes to you with my sincere greetings
and thanks. It bears unique stamps of Great Britain specially
issued to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Scouting and was
posted from the World Jubilee Jamboree at Sutton Park , England. Here
35,000 Scouts and Leaders representing nearly one hundred countries arc
camping together in the friendship and freedom of the World Brotherhood
of Scouts. We are glad and grateful that you should have wished to
associate yourself with us.
1957 is not only the Jubilee Year of World Scouting; it is also the
1OOth anniversary of the birth of our Founder, the Chief Scout of the
World, Lord Baden-Powell of Gilwell. He it was who, in August 1907,
with twenty boys, held the first Scout Camp on Brownsea Island. From
that small beginning has grown the World Brotherhood of Scouts, now
over 7,000,000 strong.
I hope that lhis First Day Cover may be a happy reminder to you of
this historic event in Scouting, which is, I believe, one of the great forces
for good in the world.
The Late
LORD BADEN-POWELL OF GILWELL
O.M., G.C.M.G., G.C.V.O., K.C.B., LLD.
