Stevens' Coffee House and Hotel
Bond Street
( 1803 - 1838)
Stevens' Coffee House and Hotel was located "on the comer ofBond Street"
and variously at No 15 and No 18 Bond St. The earliest mention is in a
directory of 1803 with the description: "Good beds, Wines Etc." In 1809 the
proprietors were listed as Stevens & Towesland and a friend of Lord Byron,
writing in 1811 said: "as we had no club in common to resort to our dinners
used to be had at....his old haunt, Stevens." In 1819 a directory listsStevens
Coffee House, Bond Street and Stevens Hotel, New Bond Street so it is
possible that there may be two separate establishments. This is further
demonstrated in 1838 when Stevens Coffee-house is listed at 18 New Bond
Street under the proprietorship Scott & Company and Stevens' Hotel is also
listed as 11/12 Clifford Street, Bond Street under the same proprietorship.
No further mention is to be found although by 1891 it was noted that
Stevens' Hotel "is now a jewellers".
