The Rolls Coffee House
                                  Chancery Lane

Its earliest mention is in 1702. The name is said to have derived from the
fact that Cardinal Woolsey had lived there while Master ofthe Rolls and
the contemporary map clearly shows Rolls Gardens nearby. In the period
1756 to 1774 correspondence marked for the solicitor to the Queen
Anne's Bounty charity, Mr. Robert Chester, was addressed to him care of
this coffee house. Both the covers displayed below are addressed to him
although they merely reflect that he was conducting his business from
there.

"'f,\lfl').j\d~                  Letter posted in Llangendeime, in Carmarthen
                                 on 29th November 1773. It was delivered on
                              '  8th December evidenced by a black Bishop Mark.
                                 It was charged 4d.

                                 Letter posted locally in Southall in 1772 and
                                 delivered on 15th April evidenced by a black
                                 Bishop Mark on the reverse. It was charged 1d.
