Joe's Coffee House
8, Mitre Court, Fleet Street
(? - 1833)
The earliest mention of"Myter Court" was in 1677. By 1720 it was
described as "much taken up by Coffee-houses and leading down into
Temple by steps". No mention of Tom's Coffee House was made in a
listing of 1714 and the first reference to it appears in 1744 although it had
clearly been in existence before then. The 1744 reference was a notice
that Joseph Lewingdon ,master of Tom's Coffee House in Mitre Court,
had died - "a man generally known and well respected". In 1782 a notice
announces that "Matthew Stanger from Nandoes Fleet Street, Nephew of
the late Mr. Davis at Joe's Coffee House begs leave to inform his friends
and the public in general that he has taken the said Coffee House and
fitted it up in the neatest and genteelist manner as a Coffee House and
Tavern. For the accommodation of gentlemen he has laid in a large
assortment of Wines and liquor of the best qualities which he humbly
hopes will recommend him to those gentlemen who will do him the
honour of their favours". In 1803 it was described as "frequented by
professional gentlemen". The last reference to Joe's was in a directory of
1833.
