DIGITAL MICROSCOPY OF THE FOUR ANNAS STAMPS
THE BLUE PRINTINGS
THE GREY LILAC OR DEEP BLUE
This stamp is a deep blue with significant purple content. Unique to this 1888
stamp are the deposits, within the ink, that have a gold or black colour. These
are responsible for the apparent greyish shade and for the sheen which does
not occur on any other stamps.
BLUE BLUE DEEP BLUE comparison
DULL BLUE DULL BLUE GREENISH comparison
The deep blue colour is clearly well dispersed, when the deposits are ignored, but the blue and dull blue
have much more patchiness in distribution with the blue being more intense. The greenish blue has fewer
blue patches and may be the background shade in all but the deep blue.
